Power AI Tools Coming to All OPPO Smartphones

Oppo has unveiled plans to introduce powerful new artificial intelligence (AI) features in its upcoming smartphones, including some budget and mid-range models.

At an event in London on June 3, 2024, Oppo outlined its AI strategy and introduced its partners who will help integrate generative AI tools into its phones.

Nicole Zhang, the general manager of Oppo’s AI Product division, highlighted four key traits of next-gen AI phones:

– Efficient computing

– Real-world perception

– Self-learning ability

– Creativity

With over 5,000 AI-related patents, Oppo already offers various AI features in its smartphone software, including camera enhancements and performance optimization.

Oppo’s Obert language model, in testing since 2020, supports over 100 generative AI features in the Find X smartphone. Obert uses a hybrid approach, combining on-device and cloud processing. The 7-billion parameter model uses up to 3.9GB of RAM and 3.5GB of storage, ensuring high efficiency.

Oppo’s AI software boosts productivity with features like fast transcription, real-time translation, and seamless collaboration between desktop AI and phones. For creative users, the software aids in photo editing and personalized content creation through multimodal and motion generation technologies.

One notable feature, the AI Eraser, allows users to remove unwanted objects from photos and fill in missing content. According to Oppo, this tool is used about 15 times a day on average.

The next generation of Oppo AI smartphones will debut with the Reno 12 Pro series, followed by the next Find X model. These phones will support both Oppo’s AI software and Google’s Gemini large language models, which offer features like AI Writer and AI Recording Summary.

Zhang mentioned that the integration of Oppo and Google’s software will lead to a comprehensive transformation and restructuring of the AI phone ecosystem. Oppo is also partnering with MediaTek to optimize chip storage and efficiency in flagship processors.

While many manufacturers include next-gen AI features in their flagship phones, Oppo is extending these capabilities to more affordable models, such as the A series. If a phone’s chipset isn’t powerful enough for on-device AI processing, Oppo will use cloud-based processing instead.
